Center for Competitive Change

FIC has gone paperless, the latest adoption of cutting-edge technology to assist our attorneys in applying their wisdom to obtain extraordinary results.

FIC recently released an Interwoven "WorkSite," a new document management system that manages and organizes case information, in particular email communication. While FIC has used electronic document management systems for more than 15 years, we chose to implement a virtual folder system mimicking the FIC manual file system. Stated simply, FIC has eliminated the old file cabinet and replaced it with a virtual one that has the added benefit of providing our attorneys and clients with secure, easy, and complete access to documents and information relating to current and past cases. Whether in Florida, Georgia, New York, California or the many other places our attorneys frequently find themselves, we can now easily access all case documents as if we were in Dayton.

Yes, as the above header suggests, this progress includes virtual storage of and access to emails. Emails and documents are organized in a way that any person familiar with Outlook will understand. This familiar view allows staff and attorneys to easily store emails and attachments directly into the correct virtual file cabinet. Documents created electronically (or a scanned image of a physical document) also are all placed in the case-specific virtual file cabinet, making all the documents and information about a case available electronically and in one place.

FIC's new technology makes it easier for our attorneys to locate documents (especially emails) whether they are in or out of the office, saving time, energy and expense and allowing them to spend more time developing creative strategies and arguments for our clients. FIC has adopted a search option that locates documents quickly, using the familiar Boolean-style for searching. Interwoven "WorkSite" also integrates with the LexisNexis Total Search server, allowing our attorneys to locate relevant information on lexis.com and leverage existing FIC documents on related topics with a single search. Becoming a paperless office is just the most recent example of FIC embracing technology to better serve our clients. Some other examples include:

  • A digital dictation workflow system that allows for streamlined dictation and transcription whether in the office or on the road.
  • A remote backup and recovery system allowing FIC to rebuild critical servers within hours of a natural or technical disaster.
  • A business continuity plan that FIC is always refining and updating so that we can serve our clients with little interruption, including the adaptation of technology that allows our attorneys to work virtual if our office is ever inaccessible.
  • Properly destroying or recycling its electronics and other office equipment and hardware in a secure and environmentally conscious manner.

FIC continues to develop and evaluate the most current law management innovations and technology. We look forward to sharing other exciting advancements with you as adopted.
